This implies that the physiology of the host tissue changes throughout the infection cycle, and consequently, also the nutrients available for the pathogen ( 13). Typically, after 3 to 6 days, this biotrophic phase is followed by a necrotrophic phase during which the lesion becomes necrotic and new sporangia emerge ( 11, 12). Moreover, P. infestans is a hemibiotrophic pathogen that requires viable host cells during the initial stages of the infection cycle, the so-called biotrophic phase with minimal symptoms. Oomycetes are considered osmotrophs that extracellularly catabolize complex host polymers, such as proteins, sugars, and fatty acids, using an arsenal of secreted enzymes, followed by the import of degraded nutrients into the cell ( 10). Both the apoplastic hyphae and haustoria provide close contact with the plant, facilitating the exchange of effectors and nutrients ( 9). From there, P. infestans colonizes the mesophyll hyphae grow in the apoplast while forming intracellular feeding structures called haustoria. These encyst and germinate to form a germ tube with an appressorium to penetrate epidermal cells of the plant. P. infestans sporangia are aerially dispersed, and after landing on a plant surface, these can release flagellate zoospores ( 8). Hence, there is a continuous quest for novel more durable control strategies. The pathogen has a highly flexible genome facilitating rapid adaptation to control strategies, be it resistant cultivars or chemical agents ( 6), and its profuse sporulation causes P. infestans to spread extremely fast ( 7). The most well-known oomycete is Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of late blight disease on tomato and potato, which leads to significant yield losses worldwide ( 5). These share morphological characteristics with fungi, yet belong to the Stramenopiles, a eukaryotic lineage that besides oomycetes also includes diatoms and brown algae ( 4). A class of organisms comprising important plant and animal pathogens is the oomycetes ( 3). While increasing knowledge has been gained on secreted effector proteins that facilitate host colonization ( 2), the nature of pathogen nutrition remains underexplored. Plants and pathogens maintain a complex relationship that generally involves the secretion of effector proteins by the pathogen to manipulate plant cell processes and the scavenging of nutrients from the host by the pathogen to support its growth and proliferation ( 1). This integrated metabolic model for the P. infestans-tomato interaction provides a framework to integrate data and generate hypotheses about in planta nutrition of P. infestans throughout its infection cycle. As infection progresses, P. infestans performs less de novo synthesis of metabolites and scavenges more metabolites from tomato. This revealed profound changes in pathogen-host metabolism during infection. We also exploited dual-transcriptome data of a time course of a full late blight infection cycle on tomato leaves and integrated the expression of metabolic enzymes in the model. This showed, for example, that P. infestans, a thiamine auxotroph, depends on certain metabolic reactions of the tomato thiamine biosynthesis. We used this integrated model to simulate metabolic fluxes from host to pathogen and explored the topology of the model to study the dependencies of the metabolism of P. infestans on that of tomato. Here, we reconstructed an integrated metabolic model of P. infestans and tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum) by integrating two previously published models for both species. To date, the nutrient flux from host to pathogen during infection has hardly been studied, and the interlinked metabolisms of the pathogen and host remain poorly understood. P. infestans is a hemibiotrophic pathogen, and during infection, it scavenges nutrients from living host cells for its own proliferation. The oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans causes potato and tomato late blight, a disease that is a serious threat to agriculture.

They are a joke and I hope they die out quickly. This group is a lay religious order supporting sexism above all else. Overall, Knights numbers are stable, even growing worldwide, with almost 2 million members across the globe. While there has been resistance, there has also been significant buy-in, Heffernan said. Members pushed for a grandfather clause to allow Knights, particularly older members, to continue to wear the old regalia and it was granted, he said. The Knights have recognized this, and the old regalia has not been outlawed. "If I was 80 years old, I'm not going to go out and buy a new uniform." "You're always going to have the diehards who are going to wear the old regalia," he said. Heffernan understands and sympathizes with those seeking to keep tradition alive. That included an online petition that garnered almost 10,000 signatures "to reconsider the consequence of this proposed change and keep the existing regalia of the Fourth Degree Assemblies that the Knights and the rest of the world has come to recognize and love." The move has been met with significant resistance, much of it from Canada, Heffernan said. Board members believe it will open the doors to a new generation of Knights. The vote came after three years of testing and discussion within the membership. The new look debuted at the 135th Supreme Convention in St. In 2017, the international Knights' board of directors unanimously voted to adopt a new uniform for the fourth degree. The modernized version will be a blue blazer with the fourth-degree emblem, dark gray slacks, a blue tie and a black beret. But it has remained relatively the same since 1940, consisting of a plumed chapeau, a tuxedo, a cape and a ceremonial sword. The uniform of the fourth degree has undergone several changes since it was adopted in 1900. You're just not part of the color guard." "You could become a member, be a fourth degree and never buy a uniform. Many believe all Knights must wear the regalia, but it's only for fourth degree members, "and even then you don't have to wear the regalia," he said. Heffernan said some misconceptions exist about the uniform. Several men noted the cape and chapeau as drawbacks. It was a major point raised in a roundtable in March at the Archdiocese of Toronto chancery when the Knights gathered a group of men to discuss their impressions of the organization. "If I had to wear that regalia, I wouldn't join the Knights," is the refrain Heffernan said he has heard often. The Knights have undertaken extensive research in how to attract new members and have heard one constant from men as to why they won't join the order. It's all part of the Knights' efforts to attract new members, particularly younger men, said Dan Heffernan, Ontario state deputy for the organization. The ceremonial swords will continue to be part of the uniform. The new uniform will be a jacket and beret. The preferred dress for fourth-degree members worldwide will no longer include the cape and chapeau. The Color Corps, which acts as an honor guard at religious and civic functions, is distinguishable by its official regalia of tuxedo, cape, chapeau, white gloves and sword. July 1 will mark the end of a 79-year era when the Knights change the ceremonial Color Corps regalia long associated with the fraternal Catholic order. TORONTO (CNS) - A long-standing tradition will end this summer as the Knights of Columbus discard the ceremonial capes and plumed chapeaus of its fourth-degree members. Comedy games are inherently divisive, but it’s nice to see Squanch push the boundaries of what humor in a video game can look like. If you enjoy watching a good episode of Rick and Morty or playing Metroid Prime, High on Life is one of the more novel and refreshing releases this month. Satisfying combat, smooth traversal, and a smattering of hilarious vignettes make for an admirable adventure game whose individual parts are more memorable than the full picture.” “It’s more focused on those immediate hits of fun that’ll keep players entertained in the moment - you probably remember “I’m Pickle Rick!” clearer than any actual plot details of that episode. “Like Rick and Morty’s Pickle Rick episode, High on Life doesn’t build to a grand punch line,” Giovanni Colantonio writes in his three-and-a-half star review of High on Life. It’s a comedy game first and foremost, so your mileage will vary depending on your sense of humor. Thankfully, it’s also fun to play. Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland’s game studio Squanch Games just launched High on Life, a Metroid Prime-inspired sci-fi shooter where every weapon can talk (and spout quips). HIGH ON LIFE - Official Game Trailer - Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022 Need for Speed Unbound is available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. There haven’t been any major racing game releases this fall, so this game thankfully fills that void quite nicely. While you’ll get the most out of Need for Speed Unbound in single-player, it also features an open-world multiplayer mode for those who want to race around a city based on Chicago with their friends. During this gap between Gran Turismo 7 and next spring’s Forza Motorsport, this open-world racer refuels a series that has been running on fumes.” “ Need for Speed Unbound is surprisingly challenging, making each race important and engaging, and it has a lot of style. “The racer eventually hits its limits due to sometimes cringe-inducing writing and repetitive objects, but the ride there packs in a lot of fun,” my three-and-a-half star Need for Speed Unbound review explains. Those latter three elements always make for an entertaining racer, and Need for Speed Unbound sticks out even further thanks to its distinct cel-shaded art style. While its trying-way-to-hard-to-be-hip dialogue will get on your nerves after a while, this is a fun street racing game with a wide selection of cars, lots of customization, and tough AI opponents. Need for Speed Unbound’s launch earlier this month might have been muted, but that has no bearing on the game’s quality. Need for Speed Unbound - Official Reveal Trailer (ft. It's usually a harmless bug bite but can sometimes cause a serious illness, such as the Zika virus (particularly harmful in pregnant women), West Nile virus, malaria, or eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). For most people, Zika causes a brief, flulike illness. Some people with severe allergies to bug bites need to have allergy medicine, including epinephrine (such as an EpiPen), with them always.Ī mosquito bite appears as an itchy, round red or pink skin bump. If you have known allergies to bug bites, talk with your physician about emergency care. Learning to identify a bug bite by how it looks and feels will help you know whether to treat the bug bite at home or seek immediate medical care. Use an insect repellent that’s been registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).How can you prevent bug bites? Here are some tips from the CDC: In a report posted May 4, 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cautioned Americans that diseases from mosquito, tick, and flea bites have soared in recent years. Two exceptions are bedbugs (tiny mites that live in and near beds) and lice, which spread through contact with an infected person, a comb, or clothing.Ĭertain bug bites can also spread illnesses, such as Zika virus, West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, Dengue fever, and yellow fever (all transmitted by mosquitoes) Lyme disease (from ticks) Rocky Mountain spotted fever (from dogs or wood ticks) and Chagas disease (from kissing bugs). Most bug bites are transmitted directly from the insect and occur outdoors. For example, most bug bites cause red bumps with pain, itching, or burning. Symptoms of bug bites provide clues to the cause and severity. Others, like poisonous spider bites, require immediate emergency medical care. But some bug bites and stings, like those from fire ants, wasps, hornets, and bees, may cause intense pain or even a serious allergic reaction. Most bug bites and stings from common insects are harmless and heal quickly. Getting a bug bite can be a creepy experience, especially if you don’t know what tiny creature left you with that red, throbbing welt on your skin. Rivet manufacturers typically list the tolerances for the weight a rivet can support on the back of the package. Standard blind rivets work well for securing metal pieces that won’t need to support a lot of weight. Having settled on using blind rivets, the next issue comes down to size, style, and material. The rivet gun pulls the mandrel through the body, expanding it to lock the material in place between the head of the body and the newly “mushroomed” end. Types of RivetsĪll blind rivets consist of a mandrel and body. The automatic tools really help when you tend to do a lot of riveting in the course of your work. Manual tools work great when you don’t have a ton of work to do. A battery-powered tool does the entire process when you pull the trigger. With a manual rivet gun, you often have to activate the handle several times to complete the work. The more expensive battery-powered tools save your hands and automatically collect spent posts after applying the rivet. Manual rivet guns and battery-powered tools accomplish the same work. These call for either a hand riveter or one of the more recent battery-powered tools. In this article, we’re more concerned with DIY applications. We also intend to avoid any applications that require pneumatic guns or heavy-duty riveting. These get their name since you can “blindly” fasten them from one side of the material without accessing (or even seeing) the other side. For the purposes of this article, we’re going to stick with blind rivets. You can search by brand or part or simply browse the selection to see what you want.First Thing’s First – What is a Rivet Gun?īoth rivets and rivet guns come in a variety of flavors. Many of the guns do come with some rivets, and if they are battery-operated, most come with the charger. Whether you are looking for an accessory or a whole set, eBay has numerous options for pop rivet guns, both new and used. Whether you choose an electric rivet gun or a cordless riveting gun is based on personal preference and the types of projects you are working on.
First released in 2006, it easily held its own against much more modern competitors and is still an excellent lens option to this day. Very expensive not ideal for casual shootersįor years, the Nikon AF-S 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens was basically the holy grail of Nikon macro photography.Unique spherical aberration control ring.If you’re a serious macro photographer looking to upgrade from a more basic macro lens, or if you’ve long appreciated Canon’s 100mm f/2.8L designed for DSLRs but are switching to mirrorless, this is the lens to buy. There’s also an innovative ring for controlling spherical aberration, which basically lets you adjust the optical quality of the out-of-focus elements of your image – not a must-have, but a nice feature that can certainly come in handy. There’s a three-position focus limiter, which guarantees faster, more-reliable autofocus for different shooting scenarios. Not only does this lens produce optically stunning images, but it packs some outstanding bonus features that’ll impress any macro photographer. It’s designed for RF-mount mirrorless cameras, and its high price point does put it out of reach for most beginners and hobbyists, but you do get what you pay for. Serious macro shooters who want top-notch image sharpness will be more than pleased with the RF 100mm f/2.8L, one of Canon’s most recent lens releases and an all-around photography powerhouse. Incredible value one of the cheapest autofocus macro lenses available. My favorite aspect of the 40mm f/2.8 is the price: It’s by far the cheapest option on this list, so if you’re a Nikon shooter and you’re on the fence about diving into macro photography, it’s an excellent first choice. While the f/2.8 aperture can’t compete with f/1.8 or f/1.4 lenses, it still offers pleasing bokeh and out-of-focus backgrounds. But on APS-C models, the 40mm focal length is equal to 60mm, so in addition to macro shots, the lens offers plenty of potential for portraits and street photography. This is a DX lens, which means it won’t function on full-frame cameras. As with the Canon 35mm lens listed above, you’ll need to get very close to your subjects for the most detailed shots, so unless they’re very cooperative, you may struggle to capture insects – but you can certainly enjoy plenty of flower and nature photography without issue. Neither of these omissions is a huge deal, however if you’re set on a ring light, you can always purchase one as an accessory, and image stabilization is more of a luxury than a necessity when doing macro work. In fact, the Nikon 40mm f/2.8 is quite similar to the aforementioned Canon 35mm macro lens, though it does lack both a ring light and image stabilization. It’s small, light, and lets you shoot brilliant photos of tiny subjects without spending a lot of money. This 40mm f/2.8 macro lens has long been revered as one of the best options for Nikon shooters who want to get started with close-up photography (and who also appreciate a versatile all-around lens). Optical performance isn’t as good as more expensive lenses.Optical stabilization (unusual for this price range). It may not be as versatile or even as sharp as other lenses on this list, but this lens offers outstanding value for money! Pros Note that you’ll need to get extremely close to your subject for high magnifications, so the lens isn’t ideal for insect macro photography – but it works great for shooting flowers, products, and other still subjects. The lens also features image stabilization, which is always a nice bonus. No, it’s not extremely powerful, but it can easily be the difference between a good shot and a blurry shot, and it’ll cast a nice, even glow over your subjects. The best part about this lens is the built-in ring light. Note that you can use the 35mm f/2.8 on APS-C DSLRs like Canon’s Rebel lineup – or you can purchase an adapter and mount the lens on one of Canon’s excellent APS-C RF-mount mirrorless cameras, such as the EOS R10 or EOS R50. The 35mm focal length does require you to get very close to your subject, but after taking Canon’s 1.6x crop factor into account, the effective focal length is actually in the area of 56mm. I wholeheartedly recommend it for beginners who are looking for a way into macro photography without breaking the bank (plus, it’s designed for Canon’s less-expensive line of APS-C cameras, which are wildly popular among beginner and amateur shooters). The Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 is one of my absolute favorite macro lenses because it’s simple, inexpensive, and highly effective. |
